Depending on who's talking, the U.S. is – or isn't – in a recession. This year's list of top corporate employers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area reflects a downturn in homebuilding, a drop in discretionary spending and a slight upswing in health care and video game services.

Centex Corp. saw a 38 percent drop in employment, from 3,428 employees in 2006 to 1,306 in 2007. Citigroup Inc., among the major banks and securities firms hit by $309 billion in mortgage losses and writedowns, has cut jobs, including 375 locally.

GameStop Corp., the world's largest video game and entertainment software retailer, rose by 875 employees in a year. MedicalEdge Healthcare Group Inc. rose by 1,150 employees.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., with its distribution center, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and Sam's Clubs in D-FW, kept its No. 1 position on the top employers list. It reported 34,871 employees, a 7 percent increase over 2007 figures.

AMR Corp., parent company of American Airlines, repeats as No. 2 despite losing 400 employees, from 25,476 to 25,076.

There were two newcomers to this year's list: ATC Logistics & Electronics, a subsidiary of Aftermarket Technology Corp., and Idearc Media, which manages and delivers print, online and wireless publishing and advertising services.

ATC Logistics & Electronics logged in with 2,720 employees. Idearc, the official publisher of Verizon print directories and home to local search Superpages, has 1,700 D-FW employees.

For this list, companies were asked the number of full-time equivalent workers (with part-timers counting as half), based in, but not necessarily living in, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall and Tarrant counties.
