Texas employers expanded payrolls by 43,600 jobs in May, the largest monthly gain in more than three years, according to preliminary data released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission.

The state unemployment rate remained at 8.3 percent, unchanged from April and well below the national average of 9.7 percent in May.

Employers in nine of 11 job categories expanded payrolls, with employment increasing by 10,200 jobs in the professional and business services category and by 9,600 in leisure and hospitality.

Manufacturing employers expanded payrolls by 7,000 jobs. The mining and logging category, which includes oil and gas drilling, grew by 6,500. Construction added 2,000.

The only categories showing employment losses were information, down 2,900, and government, down 1,100.

“During the month of May, employers in most industries added jobs,” said Tom Pauken, chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission.

Payroll employment increased in 41 states and the District of Columbia in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday. Five states lost jobs on a net basis, while employment was unchanged in four states.

Texas added more jobs than any other state, followed by California, up 28,300 jobs, and New York, up 21,000.

In percentage terms, employment grew 0.9 percent in Delaware last month compared with its level the previous month, a faster growth rate than in any other state.

Maine and Rhode Island were tied for second, with employment up 0.7 percent. Employment in Texas grew 0.4 percent in May compared to its level the previous month.

Nationwide, the jobless rate fell in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Six states had increases, and the unemployment rate was unchanged in seven states.
